A common political say- ing since at least 1880, when it was first recorded, meaning that the political party that wins the most votes in the state of Maine in a national election will win nationally. This has often, but not always, been the case. The saying, however, originally referred to New York, being first recorded in 1848 as “As goes Dutchess County, so goes the state, and as New York goes, so goes the Union.”
