kibbutz. Kibbutz means “community” in Hebrew; the first of these cooperatives founded in 1909 along the Sea of Galilee. There were many cooperatives before the Israeli examples, their philosophy based on the work of British social reformer Robert Owen (1771–1858), said to have lost a considerable fortune championing his work. Don’t confuse kibbutz with kibitzer (qv). |
