kid. Kid is an adaptation of the Old Norse kio, also meaning the young of a goat, and seems to have come into the language in about 1200. The word was applied to the young of certain other animals not long after, but isn’t recorded for a young child until 1599, as low slang, though it is now standard En- glish. Since kid can mean a child or a young goat, to kid came to mean to hoax in early-19th-century England, to make a child or goat of someone. |
