Khmer Rouge. A khmer is a Cambodian, the member of a civilization that reached its peak in the ninth to 15th centuries. The official language of these Cambodians or Khmers is Mon- Khmer. Many were members of the Khmer Rouge (the red or communist Khmers who, under the vicious leadership of the dictator Pol Pot, killed from 2 to 3 million people in trying to force millions to work on huge collective farms). The agrarian utopia came to naught, the monster Pol Pot dying in 1998, but it left Cambodia a vast killing field (qv) of skulls and bones, a national unburied potters field.
