kickshaws. Tidbits of food, trifles of small value. The word, spelled kickshaws, was used by Shakespeare in Henry IV, Part II, but had formerly been spelled kickhose. The confusion is un- derstandable when we realize that the word is merely a corrup- tion of the French quelque chose, “something,” which comes from the Latin qualis causa, “of what kind.” |
