kibitzer. It seems that German card players of the 16th cen- tury found meddlesome onlookers just as annoying as card players do today. The constant gratuitous “advice” of these chatterers reminded them of the kiebitz (the lapwing, or plover) whose shrill cries frightened game away from approaching hunters. Thus all kibitzers are named for this troublesome bird, our peewit, which inspired the German word kiebitzen, “to look over the shoulder of a card player.” A play called The Kib- bitzer (1929), which made Edward G. Robinson famous, con- tributed and the popularity of kibitzer. |
