Eric Partridge, in A Diction- ary of Catchphrases (1977), defines this British phrase as “look- ing for something either unprocurable, or at the least, exceed- ingly scarce,” tracing it back to about 1890. I think I have heard a version making something even more unprocurable: looking for maidenheads in a whorehouse. |
