thimblerig. Thimblerig is a sleight-of-hand swindling game in which the operator palms a pea while appearing to cover it with one of three thimblelike cups, and offers to bet that no one can tell under which cup the pea lies. The name is first recorded in about 1815 and is still heard, but is mainly known as the shell game today after the walnut shells it is played with. |
