词汇 ave atque vale
词源
ave atque vale. Latin for “hail and farewell.” In about 57 b.c. the Roman poet Catullus traveled to Asia and found the tomb of his brother, who had died near Troy. After he performed the ancient Greek burial rites over the grave, there came to him the famous ave atque vale lament containing a phrase still common to dozens of languages over 2,000 years after he in- vented it:
Dear brother, through many states and seas Have I
come to this sorrowful sacrifice, Bringing you the last
gift for the dead . . .
Accept these offerings wet with fraternal tears; And
forever, brother, hail and farewell.
