词源	average. Average has an unusual rather than average deriva- tion. The word derives from the French avarie, a word of Arabic origin that meant “less than total damage to a ship or its cargo.” Since average damage was a mean between the extremes of to- tal damage and no damage, the word average ultimately came to take its current meaning.
