Axis; Allies; Axis of Evil. Axis and the Allies were terms common during World War II, the former referring to the political alliance of Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the latter re- ferring to the allies of the United States and Britain. Axis is first recorded in 1936 and Allies in 1914, when it was the name of those countries that opposed the Central Powers in Europe during World War I. In recent times, as early as 2001, the phrase Axis of Evil was coined by U.S. president George W. Bush’s speechwriters David Frum and Mike Gerson to describe the al- liance of terrorist organizations and terrorist states around the world. See evil one.
