Awake, Mars! In the Roman reign of King Numa, legend tells us, a shield fell from heaven, an oracle declaring the seat of the Roman Empire would lie wherever that shield should be. On hearing this, Numa had 11 identical shields made so that the original could not be identified. The shields were kept in the Temple of Mars, the Roman god of war. If war was declared, a Roman general moved the shield, with the phrase “Awake, Mars!” |
