词汇 | away down south in dixie |
词源 | Away Down South in Dixie. As the Star of the West sped from New York to Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, just before the start of the Civil War, the Union troops gathered on deck, telling stories and singing. Ironically, their favorite tune turned out to be “Away Down South in Dixie,” which songwriter and minstrel David D. Emmett had composed on his violin in 1859 “while looking out at the cold dreary streets of New York City and wishing he were down home in Dixie.” This would become the favorite marching song of the Confed- erates during the Civil War, but it was first sung as a war tune by these Yankees heading South. “In Dixie land I’ll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie . . .”: one war correspondent re- ported that these words were heard again and again, over 20 times on the first day alone, as the ship cut through the billow- ing waves. See god bless america. |
