词汇 | chad |
词源 | chad. A relatively new word, made famous during the 2000 presidential election, but dating back to about the late 1960s, for (of all things!) the bits of cardboard remnants that are punched out from computer ballot cards or from any paper on which a paper punch is used. “What the city is trying to avoid,” the Los Angeles Times (5/19/81) reported “is a repeat of April’s Great Chad Chore, when more than 40,000 ballots had to be recounted because their chads—the punched-out portions— failed to break loose.” Chad may derive from the mining term chat meaning bits of white gravel-like rock, a by-product of lead mining, that are sometimes used to surface roads. A re- cent synonym for chads is “confetti.” A pregnant chad is a chad with a “dimple” on it, made by the stylus pushing too lightly against it. |
