词汇 silicon
词源
silicon; Silicon Valley. Silicon is a nonmetallic element oc- curring in minerals and rocks and constituting over one-fourth of the Earth’s crust. It has been used most recently in manufac- turing computer chips. Silicon Valley, the name first recorded in 1974, is an area in northern California, southwest of San Francisco in the Santa Clara valley. It is so named because the many microelectronic firms based there make it the world capi- tal of computer technology. Regarding silicon, it’s said that art- ist and wit James Whistler (1834–1903) was dismissed from West Point because he failed chemistry. “Had silicon been a gas,” he later quipped, “I would have been a major-general.” See god bless america.
