词汇 | simoleon |
词源 | simoleon. Our slang for “one dollar,” common since the late 19th century, may derive from the British slang simon, for “six- pence,” which can be traced back to about 1700. First the British simon became our simon for a dollar (ca. 1859 but now obso- lete) and then for some reason it became simoleon—though this leaves unexplained the shift in accent from the first syllable in simon to the second in simoleon. Simon is said to have been used by the British for “sixpence” because it is alliterative with “six,” but Simon Magus (see simony) has been suggested as an eponym. |
