词源 | Simon Pure. English dramatist and actress Susan Centlivre (1669–1723) created a host of aptronyms in her comedy A Bold Stroke for a Wife (1717). The most lasting proved to be one Simon Pure, a Pennsylvania Quaker who tries to win the heart of the heiress Ann Lovely. But Simon Pure’s letter of introduc- tion to her guardian, Obadiah Prim, is stolen by Colonel Feign- well, who pretends to be Simon Pure and convinces Ann Love- ly’s guardian to let her marry him. At the last minute Simon Pure shows up, proves that he is “the real Simon Pure,” and pro- vides a happy ending. As a result of the play, Simon Pure be- came an eponym, his name proverbial for anything authentic, true, the real and genuine article, “the real McCoy,” as we say more often today. Mrs. Centlivre, married to Queen Anne’s chef, turned to writing for a living when her husband died, and she became one of the few women of her time to earn her liveli- hood as a playwright. |
