Silent League. A society organized in 1903 (in the U.S. Navy of all places), of men who “solemnly agree to discourage Pro- fanity and Obscenity everywhere so long as they live,” in the words of its founder, Chaplain Carroll Q. Wright. As Gary Jen- nings notes in his delightful Personalities of Language (1965): “I know of no sailor today who ever heard of the Silent League, but I know several who are walking evidence that Profanity and Obscenity have outlived it.” |
