| 词源 | simples. Simples is an old word for medicinal herbs. In days past, the market gardeners of Battersea in England used to grow simples, and London apothecaries went to the town to se- lect or cut the herbs they wanted. The similarity of the word simpleton and the simples of this common practice led to the use of “you must go to Battersea to get your simples cut” as a reproof to a simpleton or someone who made a very foolish observation. |
