词汇 hell-s kitchen
词源
hell’s kitchen. As that part of hell where the fires are hottest, hell’s kitchen would be unpleasant indeed, which is why it came to mean any very unpleasant, disreputable place. The ex- pression is first recorded in Davy Crockett’s An Account of Col. Crockett’s Tour to the North and Down East (1834). By 1879 it was being used as a name for an infamous district on New York City’s West Side, which Mitford Mathews tells us was “once regarded as the home of thieves and gunmen.” The Stovepipe was part of it, and nearby were the tenements of Poverty Gap.
