词汇 | twiss |
词源 | Twiss. Here the Irish had the last word, as is often the case. Author Richard Twiss (1747–1821) may have thought he had put the natives down when he published his uncomplimentary Tour in Ireland in 1775, but he hadn’t counted on the Irish wit. They promptly began to manufacture a chamber pot called the Twiss, but didn’t let it go at that. On the bottom of the chamber pot was a portrait of Richard Twiss, the picture captioned thus: Let everyone— On lying Dick Twiss. No one knows if he was inspired by the much older but similar Twiss Affair (qv), but William Randolph Hearst, the American newspaper publisher and model for Citizen Kane, was expelled from Harvard in 1885 after he gave a chamber pot to each of his professors—each chamber pot bearing each professor’s por- trait inside on the bottom. See also crapper; furphy; oliver; sacheverell; vespasienne. |
