词汇 | typo |
词源 | typo. Typo, short for typographical error, is an Americanism dating back to the 1890s. Newspapers and magazines regularly run features pointing out the best or worst typographical errors in other newspapers and magazines. For example, a Clive Barnes review in the New York Times of A Midsummer Night’s Dream found “David Waller’s virile bottom (instead of ‘Bot- tom’) particularly splendid.” Possibly the worst modern-day slip appeared in the Washington Post in 1915, where it was not- ed that President Wilson had taken his fiancée, Edith Galt, to the theater and rather than watching the play “spent most of his time entering Mrs. Galt,” instead of “entertaining Mrs. Galt.” See also entertain. |
