词汇 | typhoon |
词源 | typhoon. There is some doubt about the origin of this term for a violent tropical storm in the area of the China Seas, but it probably derives from Chinese tai fung, “big wind,” influenced by Greek tuphon, “whirlwind,” and Arabic tufan, “storm.” Ty- phon, the giant Greek father of the winds, also influenced the coinage. Joseph Conrad’s short story “Typhoon” (1903) deals with typhoons so violent that even the imperturbably obtuse captain of a tramp steamer doubts his ship’s survival. See hurricane. |
