Tyler grippe. John Tyler (1790–1863) has the dubious honor of being the only U.S. President for whom an epidemic is named. The Tyler grippe was a virulent influenza that swept the country at the time he became President in 1841. In fact, Tyler, elected vice-president, assumed office when his running mate, old William Henry Harrison, died a month after being inaugu- rated as President. Harrison died of pneumonia or the Tyler grippe, or a combination of both. |
