tycoon. Tycoon is just an American phonetic spelling of the Japanese taikun, for “great prince.” The Japanese word, in turn, comes from the Chinese ta, “great,” and chun, “prince.” Ameri- cans encountered the taikun, whose military title was shogun, during Commodore Perry’s expedition to Japan of 1852–54 and brought the word home, where it was applied to any pow- erful man, especially a wealthy businessman. |
