two down, one to go. When something is close to being ac- complished, when the finish is near, one might say two down, one to go. The common expression is from baseball, where down is a synonym for “out” and has been used that way for over a century. There are of course three outs an inning allowed to a team at bat before the opposing team gets a chance to bat. |
