词汇 | twin poets |
词源 | twin poets. Tirupati Winkatakawulu was the pseudonym of the Indian “twin poets” whose real names were Diwakarla Tirupati Sastri (1872–1919) and Cellapilla Wenkatasastri (1870–1950). The “twin poets” were good friends who wrote all their work together for more than 25 years and called them- selves by one name—the only known case of poets doing this. Great scholars as well as bards, they revived a broad interest in Indian Telugu literature with their many original poems and translations. The “twin poets” were also famous for their phe- nomenal memories, exhibited in the performance of satawad- hana, where, according to one biographer, “a hundred interro- gators were each given line-by-line a verse of four stanzas on a subject prescribed by each, the hundred verses finally repeated complete [by the twin poets] without missing a syllable.” Wenkatasastri continued to write under the pseudonym for 30 years after his fellow poet died. |
