Regarded today as a form of arthritis, gout derives from the Latin gutta, “drop,” because it was once believed that drops of bad blood or acrid matter dropped from the bloodstream into the joints and caused the painful swellings associated with the disease. The word came into English via the French goutte in about 1290.
