Age of Reason. Also called the Age of Enlightenment and the Enlightenment, this term describes the main trend of thought of 18th-century Europe, which put reason and indi- vidualism over tradition. Owing much to 17th-century think- ers, the philosophy was championed a hundred years later by Voltaire, Rousseau, and Kant, among many others. Thomas Paine’s 1794–95 book attacking the Bible and defending deism was entitled The Age of Reason. See from the ridiculous to the sublime. |
