词汇 | twerp |
词源 | twerp. This word for an insignificant objectionable little person may well be an eponym. The Englishman in question, according to several authors, is T. W. Erp, who attended Oxford in about 1911. Author J. R. R. Tolkein has called this T. W. Erp “the orig- inal twerp,” while author Roy Campbell shares his opinion and suggests that T. W. Erp was first called a twerp by “rugger- playing stalwarts” who were jealous of his charm and intellec- tual gifts. Both these authors are referring to Thomas W. Earp (1892–1958), whose last name is pronounced Erp, making the eponymous word just as likely. Earp, an art critic and author, criticized D. H. Lawrence’s paintings in the New Statesman (Aug. 17, 1929) and Lawrence replied with a poem that began: “I heard a little chicken chirp:/ My name is Thomas, Thomas Earp!/ And I can neither paint nor write,/ I only can set other people right.” It is said that Earp really did have a curious high- pitched voice similar to a “chirp,” making Lawrence’s putdown all the more effective. Another theory has twerp deriving from the Danish tver, perverse; still another that it is a variant of twit. |
