词汇 | sass |
词源 | sass. The word sass is still used to refer to stewed fruit or fresh vegetables in sections of the United States, as is “garden sass.” The word, first recorded around 1760, originally meant garden vege- tables: “Short sass” was potatoes, onions, or turnips; “long sass” was carrots, parsnips, and other vegetables. Sass, which is proba- bly an American alteration of “sauce,” didn’t acquire its more common meaning of “backtalk” until about the middle of the 19th century. This meaning possibly has something to do with the “freshness” of both long and short sass. |
