World’s Largest Store. The slogan of New York’s Macy’s, and it is no hype. Macy’s Herald Square store covers a full 55.5 acres, containing 2.2 million square feet of floor space. A good- size house has 2,000 square feet, so you could put 10,000 houses in Macy’s. The store opened in 1902 on a site that had been oc- cupied by, among other enterprises, a few quality brothels and a music hall where Thomas Edison first projected a movie. Harrods, the largest store in the United Kingdom, is only half as big as Macy’s. |
