pomology. Pomona was a Roman goddess of fruit from whose name pomology, the science of fruits and fruit growing, derives. She was the wife of Vortumnus, a Roman god of or- chards and fruit who presided over seasonal changes. Vortum- nus, also called Vertumnus, courted Pomona in a variety of forms (as a reaper, ploughsman, pruner of vines, etc.). His name may derive from the Latin vertere, “to turn,” as the god who changes his shape, or for the god of the turning or chang- ing year. Flora, the old Roman deity of flowers and fertility was another agricultural goddess. Flora had a temple erected to her near the Circus Maximus, where a special priest was in attend- ance. The public games at Rome called the Ludi Florales were held in her honor in the Circus from April 28 to May 3. Men decked themselves with flowers and women wore colorful dresses during this time of public merriment.
