In some obscure way unknown to scholars the Arabic samt in the term samt ar-rar, “way or path over the head,” be- came the Greek zenith, which ultimately became the English term for the point of sky directly overhead, or, figuratively, “the highest point, the acme, the culmination or climax.” The word is first recorded in 1387.
