词汇 | zeugma |
词源 | zeugma. Zeugma is the Greek word for “yoking” or “joining” and in English means a figure of speech in which a verb is used with two subjects or two objects, or an adjective is used to modify two nouns—although the verb or adjective is appropri- ate to only one noun. Zeugma is often unintentional, as in “She caught a cold and a husband” but it is a common satrical de- vice. An example often quoted is Dickens’s phrase in the Pick- wick Papers: “Miss Bobo . . . went straight home, in a flood of tears, and a sedan chair.” |
