词汇 zeppelin
词源
zeppelin. After a career as a soldier that included a volunteer stint with the Union army during the Civil War, the intrepid German adventurer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin retired from the German army with the rank of general and devoted himself to the development of dirigible airships. Zeppelin, inspired by a balloon ascent he made in St. Paul, Minnesota, built and flew his first rigid airship in 1900 when 62 years old, the initial flight last- ing 20 minutes. But he had to build and test four Luftschiff Zep- pelins in all before convincing the German government that his invention was militarily sound. Zeppelins came to be used extensively by the Germans in World War I, some 88 of them constructed by their inventor at his factory in Friedrichshafen. Nevertheless, they didn’t work out. Although they attained speeds of up to 36 miles per hour and were used to bomb Paris and London, the airships ultimately proved too unwieldly in combat. Count Zeppelin died in 1917, aged 79, the term zeppelin being used by then to mean any dirigible. See balloonatic.
