词源 | zed. During World War II, American and Canadian men evading the draft often blended in on opposite sides of the bor- der. However, immigration agents from both countries found one way to tell where they came from, even though they gener- ally looked, dressed, and talked alike. Agents made the suspects recite the alphabet, because Americans had been taught to re- cite the last letter of the alphabet as “zee,” while Canadians had learned to say “zed.” See z. |
