词汇 | zep |
词源 | zep. Short for zeppelin and one of the many names for the Ital- ian hero sandwich or hero in America. These names include ho- agies (in Philadelphia), submarines or subs (in Pittsburgh and elsewhere), torpedos (Los Angeles), wedgies (Rhode Island), Garibaldis (Wisconsin), bomber (upstate New York), wedge (downstate New York), Cuban sandwich (Miami), Italian sand- wich (Maine), an Italian (Midwest), grinder (New England), rocket (New York State), and poor boy (New Orleans), though this last one is made with French instead of Italian bread. Blimp- ie, though it’s a tradename and is on a shorter roll, might also qualify, as might Dagwood sandwich, for any large sandwich— after Blondie comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead’s mid- night snack creations. That’s 20 in all—and there must be more. Is the Italian hero possibly the most numerous-named thing in English? See hero. |
