词汇 | to bedpost |
词源 | to bedpost. An interesting expression that means to hold down a child’s shirttail or other garment by placing it under a heavy bedpost that the child can’t lift. While they were busy in the kitchen, garden, or elsewhere, mothers a century ago often did this to prevent young ones from wandering off into trouble. Also called bedpost on a dress tail. |
