Dennis the Menace. A name given to any mischievous but good-hearted overactive, mostly good-intentioned child, after the freckled-faced cartoon character Dennis the Menace drawn by cartoonist Hank Ketcham (1920–2001). Hank Ket- cham drew his creation from 1950 to 1994, when he retired and a team of artists took over his strip, which now appears in over 1,000 newspapers in 48 countries and 19 languages. Ac- cording to Mr. Ketcham, the cartoon character Dennis was named after the cartoonist’s four-year-old son. The real-life Dennis wrecked his bedroom while he was supposed to be napping one afternoon, leading his mother to shout, “Your son is a menace!”
