dentist. Dentist is an elegant borrowing from the French, who formed the word from their word dent for tooth. Before the mid-18th century, dentists were often called tooth-drawers in England. Noted the Edinburgh Chronicle of September 15, 1759: “Dentist figures now in our newspapers, and may do well for a French puffer [an advertising writer]; but we fancy Rutter [a local dentist at the time] is content being called a tooth-drawer.” |
