demoralize. Demoralize has the distinction of being the only word coined by the great American dictionary maker Noah Webster. Webster invented the word in 1794 when writing of the French Revolution and the bad effects such civil wars had on the morals of the people involved. He did not borrow it from the French word demoraliser, as many people thought, but made it by simply placing the common prefix de on the En- glish word moralize. |
