delicatessen. A store or department of a store in which many cooked or prepared foods such as cold meats, cheeses, salads, etc., are sold. The word derives directly from the German deli- catessen, delicacy, which comes ultimately from the Latin deli- catus, pleasing. Often the short form deli is used: “We’re having delicatessen [or deli] for dinner.” |
