词汇 thinking cap
词源
thinking cap. This expressions seems to have originated in the 17th century as put on your considering cap, that is, “take time to think something over.” At the time square-cut, tight- fitting caps were worn by scholars, clergymen, and jurists, who were all regarded as intelligent “thinking men” by the masses. Any or all of these professional men could have suggested the phrase, the common man believing that their caps helped them to think. But considering cap is most likely a reference to the fact that English judges once put on their caps before passing sentences in all cases, just as they still do before passing the death sentence.
