词汇 | boxing |
词源 | boxing. Scholars have declared the name of this sport to be “of uncertain origin,” suggesting that it may derive from Mid- dle English box, a blow, or boxen, beat. Others say that boxing comes from the boxlike shape of a prizefighting ring. The sport seems always to have had its grudge matches and prefight stare- downers. Postfight imbroglios weren’t unknown in the ancient Olympic games. In one case, a boxer arrived too late to fight, put on his gloves, ran after the winner, and began punching him, crowned as he was with his wreath of wild olive. The champion finally hid among the judges.
