sudden death. Sudden death is sometimes used today to mean a fight to the finish (but not death) of any kind. It is mainly confined to football, where it indicates an overtime pe- riod in which a tied game is won by the team that scores first. There are sudden death periods in hockey and soccer, too, but in basketball, the sport where the practice probably originated, overtime periods of a certain time duration are now played instead. |
