词汇 fo-ti-tieng
词源
fo-ti-tieng. Legend has it that the Chinese herbalist Li Chung-yun was 256 years old when he died in 1933, just after marrying for the 24th time. Moreover, he had all of his own hair and teeth and looked about 50. Whether the story is true or not is highly debatable (one writer says that “it is a matter of record with the Chinese government that Li was born in 1677”), but there is no doubt that the venerable vegetarian heartily rec- ommended fo-ti-tieng for those who desired a long active life marked with sexual vigor. Several scientists, including the French biochemist Jules Lepine, have found an alkaloid in the leaves and seeds of this low-growing plant of the pennywort family (Hydrocotyle asiatica minor) that they claim has a reju- venating effect on the nerves, brain cells, and endocrine glands. The Indian sage Nanddo Narian, then 107 himself, informed his faithful that fo-ti-tieng (which means “the elixir of long life” in Chinese) contained “a missing ingredient in man’s diet with- out which we can never control disease and decay.” Others have claimed that one-half teaspoon of the herb in a cup of hot water will remove wrinkles and increase sexual energy, and larger doses will act as an aphrodisiac. So off to the jungle marches of the Asian tropics, where the herb is found! And remember, too, Li Chang-yun’s more general (and better) advice: “Keep a quiet heart, sit calmly like a tortise, walk sprightly like a pigeon, and sleep soundly like a dog.” Also, said the sage, eat only food that grows above the ground, with the exception of ginseng root. See ginseng.
