fourscore and seven. The words fourscore and seven are from American president Abraham Lincoln’s classic Gettysburg Ad- dress, delivered on November 19, 1863, dedicating the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where a great and bloody battle of the Civil War had been fought. The two-minute or so speech famously began: “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that men are created equal.” It ended: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” It is one of the most famous and most quoted speeches, or prose poems, in history and used the words under God long before the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag (June 1954).
