词汇 | fossick |
词源 | fossick. Nineteenth-century Australian miners apparently coined this word meaning to search for gold by reworking waste piles of rock called washings, or to undermine another person’s diggings. The word seems to derive from fuss, or a dia- lect word for a fussy person. Over time it came to mean to rummage or to search around for anything, as in “I was fossick- ing among some old papers and found a letter from her.” Chiefly heard in Australia, the word has some currency in England and the U.S. |
