词汇 four horsemen
词源
Four Horsemen. “Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crow- ley and Layden.” This was the opening of sportswriter Grant- land Rice’s coverage of Notre Dame’s 13–7 defeat of Army at New York City’s Polo Grounds on October 18, 1924, that im- mortalized the Notre Dame backfield. Notre Dame student publicist George Strickler seems to have suggested the name to Rice after seeing Rudolph Valentino’s movie The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Seven Mules, for Notre Dame’s line, was first suggested by Notre Dame center Adam Walsh in 1924, when, piqued by all the attention given to the backfield, he told the press: “We are just the seven mules. We do all the work so that these four fellows can gallop into fame.” The expression Four Horsemen is a shortening of the four horsemen of the apoc- alypse, who are mentioned in the biblical book of Revelation, the four horsemen there being Conquest, Slaughter, Famine, and Death. Just the day before Notre Dame’s backfield was dubbed The Four Horsemen, “Granny” Rice invented the name The Galloping Ghost for Illinois star running back Red Grange. See retiring a number.
